- Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior: Jason Wells (30 min; 11:00am)
Jason Wells, Registered Professional Forester for Sonoma RCD, will provide a basic overview of wildland fire behavior, including the primary wildland fire environment components (fuels, weather, and topography); how characteristics and interactions of fuels, weather, and topography affect fire behavior; how fire behavior affects risk to firefighters; and fuels management practices to modify fire behavior.
- Counteracting Wildfire Misinformation: All (30 min; 11:30am)
Wildfire mitigation requires accurate information about drivers of wildfire change, the impacts to society and ecosystems, and actions that alter trends. Misinformation confuses people about the causes, contexts, and impacts of wildfire and substantially hinders society’s ability to proactively adapt to and plan for inevitable future fires. Using the work of Jones et al. 2022 as a starting point, we will document common myths, begin collecting ecologically-sound scientifically-based information into a reference for the Working Group, and discuss strategies for pre-bunking misinformation.
