Description

Please join us Thursday, October 19, 10am-12pm on Zoom for the monthly meeting of the Sonoma County Forest Conservation Working Group.

This month, we will hear “Public Perceptions of Forest Stewardship: Review of Research and Best Practices in Communication” presented by Kristina Rizga.
Veteran journalist and a member of the Sonoma County Forest Conservation Working Group, Kristina Rizga will summarize the results of her year-long investigation of public attitudes about ecological thinning and prescribed burning. Her feature, “Learning how to garden a forest,” was an August cover story in Grist, a national magazine covering solutions to climate change. In this presentation, Kristina will go beyond the content of her story to review two decades of research on factors that influence public opinions about wildfire resilience projects — and share findings from her own reporting on best practices in communication and public education.
Kristina Rizga has been a journalist for 20 years. She was an education correspondent at The Atlantic for three years, and a senior reporter at Mother Jones for six years before that. She received her certification as a California Naturalist at Pepperwood, assists with classes in forest stewardship and prescribed burning, and edits a newsletter for the Coast Ridge Community Forest (please subscribe here!).
The story that will be referenced in this presentation: “Learning How to Garden a Forest,” Grist magazine, August 17, 2023https://grist.org/science/prescribed-burns-land-management-california-forests/
After Kristina’s presentation and Q&A, we will open the floor for a discussion of our own experiences, successes, challenges and needs around effectively communicating about forest stewardship.

In addition to a fantastic in-depth presentation from Kristina Rizga, we will also have the pleasure of hearing a brief presentation from the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board about changes to their general timber permits.

From the Water Board: “In a nutshell, we’re changing the Categorical Waiver to the General Waste Discharge Requirements (GWDR) and pulling out the provision providing eligibility for coverage of standard THPs.” The Conditional Waiver is only infrequently used for standard timber harvest plans (over 90% of landowners seek coverage under the General WDR) and the additional documentation by landowners and review by staff required for each enrollment make it somewhat cumbersome and inefficient to use. Regional Water Board staff believe that it is no longer necessary to retain a second general permit for enrolling THPs.

This change will affect specific types of forest management activities on non-federal lands in the North Coast Region. Attached is a public notice. Public comments are due October 26th. Jonathan Warmerdam, Environmental Program Manager I (Supervisor) for the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board will be presenting.
